Swim Course
Details
The 1.5 mile swim will start on the east side of Alcatraz island and finish in Aquatic Park. The course will be monitored by kayakers, lifeguards, and support boats. Swimmers should aim about 200 yards left of the entrance to Aquatic Park; if you aim directly for the entrance, the ebb tide WILL sweep you past it. The swimmers will enter the cove at Aquatic Park and then head for the east side of the beach. Final swim instructions, including tide conditions and suggested landmarks for sightings, will be given in the pre-race briefing
Water Entry and Start
The Red & White Ferry will stop about 100 yards southeast of Alcatraz. The National Park Service requires that we "comply with a request from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to stay at least 100 yards away from Alcatraz Island to protect nesting seabirds".
Once the ferry is in position and we have given the “all-clear”, all 350 swimmers must enter the water in the space of 7-8 short minutes via two doors on either side of the Red & White Ferry.
Your race time begins when you cross the rubber mat at the ferry door exit. Once you reach the mat/exit door, jump quickly and swim immediately away from the ferry so the next swimmers may jump. (Please make sure you have a safe place to jump without hitting another swimmer, then GO!)
